Russia - Zelenograd Center for Culture and Leisure: illuminating culture
Hosting an array of cultural, educational and recreational public activities, Zelenograd Center for Culture and Leisure is one of the best multifunctional structures in Moscow. Inaugurated in 1983, Zelenograd Center hosts a 1000 seat concert hall, a theater hall with 760 seats, a dance hall for 220 people and an auditorium, all fitted with a modern light and sound equipment. Besides festivals, concerts and theatrical performances, many different art exhibitions, scientific conferences and symposiums are held within this prestigious venue, reaching about 430 thousand visitors a year.
On the occasion of a general renovation, the city authorities decided to provide the structure with an innovative, LED based outdoor decorative and functional lighting system, whose first phase included the illumination of selected areas of the façade according to a monochromatic colour changing scheme.
The development of the required lighting concept, inspired by the outdoor architectural lighting of the Royal National Theatre in London, was entrusted to the company Bardakhanova Champkins Architects. With its grey, massive concrete structure dating back to the late 80’s, this building looks architecturally old-fashioned, fragmented in its shapes and volumes arranged on different levels. A professional lighting system had to able to completely change its essence transforming it into a suggestive structure linked to its cultural scope by a new artistic illumination.
An on-site mock-up was required according to the company internal policy in order to provide a general idea of the possible visual effects, identify the most suitable installation positions, select the most performing fixtures according to the general requirements. Following to the results of the tests and on the basis of the lighting calculations produced by specific computer simulation softwares, the final product specifications led to the choice of the most suitable lighting fixtures, accessories and control materials.
Meeting the unconditional approval of the experts of the architectural bureau, the customer and the installation company, GRIVEN’s LED colour changers have been chosen for this installation, as they could comply with the required brightness level, light output and even colour distribution. An array of POWERSHINE MK2 D and S in RGBW colour configuration with medium and wide optics, ZAPHIR RGBW and EMERALD RGBW have therefore been installed on the façade of Zelenograd Center in order to reach an even flood lighting with bright, intense colours. The fixtures have been installed on the roof of the first floor at an optimal distance from the surface in order to provide the selected walls with an even colour covering. Coupled with a variety of high build and design optics groups for the utmost optical efficiency, balanced projection and photometric flexibility, the combination of RGBW LEDs chosen for these fixtures offers an unprecedented astonishing white light output quality, as well as a wide variety of intermediate colour hues for an even broader range of application purposes.
